Pro Bono Client Granted Release Under DC’s Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act

June 2024

On June 12, 2024, the District of Columbia Superior Court granted early release to our pro bono client, who was sentenced to 36 years to life when he was 18 years old.  Like many DC inmates incarcerated in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, our client was confined to facilities hundreds and sometimes over a thousand miles away from family and friends.

Williams & Connolly argued that our client’s sentence should be reduced under the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act (IRAA), a DC law that recognizes the diminished culpability of young offenders. After substantial briefing, oral argument, and an evidentiary hearing, the court agreed and, over the government’s objection, sentenced our client to time-served.

After over 32 years in prison, our client was released and is now home in DC with his family.

The team  representing the client included associates Patrick Bradley, Lauren Weinberger, and Beth Wilson as well as summer associate Alyssa Fagel.
