On September 29, 2021, partner Tom Hentoff will speak on a panel titled “The Attack of the Supreme Court on Times v. Sullivan” at the Media Law Resource Center’s 2021 Media Law Conference in Leesburg, VA. The discussion will address the dissents of Justice Thomas and Justice Gorsuch and whether they are legally sound, if the votes are there to overturn Sullivan, what might replace the decision, and whether celebrities should have to meet the same high standards as public officials to make out a libel claim.
Tom serves as co-chair of Williams & Connolly’s Trademark and Copyright and First Amendment and Media practice groups. His practice is concentrated in intellectual property disputes, First Amendment and media law, and complex civil litigation. Tom has represented clients in a wide variety of copyright, trademark, trade secret, defamation, privacy, false-advertising, and class action litigation and counseling matters. He was recently recognized by Law360 as a 2021 "MVP" in Media & Entertainment law. In Chambers USA’s 2021 edition, observers noted that Tom’s “written product is stellar” and that he “is an excellent problem solver.” Previous editions of Chambers USA reported that sources say: “He is able to understand complex copyright issues and provide creative legal arguments to navigate situations where the law has not caught up with technology.”
