On October 26-28, Georgetown Law’s Executive & Continuing Legal Education department will be hosting the 2020 Law Firm General Counsel Virtual Workshop. Partner John Villa will be speaking about “Managing and Defending Claims Against Law Firms,” and will be joined by an expert faculty of experienced General Counsel and law firm leaders. This workshop is designed to prepare lawyers who are becoming general counsel for their respective law firms.
His presentation will address investigating the claim, dealing with the firm lawyers accused of malpractice, retention of separate counsel, selection of experts, disclosure obligations to clients and former clients, potential conflicts in the development of the defense, dealing with insurers and attempting to execute on all of the foregoing tasks efficiently, economically and quickly without jeopardizing the law firm’s privileges and confidences.
Participants in this three-day workshop will develop expertise in handling conflicts and business intake issues, internal investigations, risks created by rapidly changing technology, regulatory and compliance requirements, claims against the firm, and other ethical and risk management issues with a particular focus on how these concerns are likely to be affected by changes in law firm practice during and after the pandemic.
