Law360 Names Williams & Connolly Among 2024 "Appellate Practice Groups of the Year"

February 2025

Law360 has once again named Williams & Connolly among its “Appellate Practice Groups of the Year,” representing the fourth time the firm has won the award in the past five years. The publication highlighted the firm’s multiple U.S. Supreme Court wins, including in Starbucks Corp. v. McKinney, where the Court held that when considering the National Labor Relations Board’s request for a preliminary injunction under Section 10(j) of the National Labor Relations Act, district courts must apply the traditional four factors articulated in Winter v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., and Snyder v. United States, where the Court held that federal law criminalizes bribes to state and local officials but does not criminalize gratuities.

During an interview with Law360, Lisa Blatt, chair of the firm’s Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation practice group, said that members of the appellate practice “have just been killing it in the courts of appeals” and have argued multiple cases before the Supreme Court in recent years. Lisa also highlighted that Luke McCloud recently returned to Williams & Connolly after serving as Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice. Luke told Law360 that he “feels an obligation to promote opportunities for younger lawyers, and particularly young associates, in the same way Lisa once did when pushing for him to make his first argument before the Supreme Court.”

Williams & Connolly’s Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation practice has argued 22 Supreme Court merits cases over the past five Terms. During the past two Terms, Williams & Connolly was lead counsel in twelve merits cases and argued eleven—a record for any group in private practice.
