Williams & Connolly Client Secures a Discharge Upgrade

January 2025

In late 2024, Williams & Connolly helped secure a discharge upgrade for a pro bono client, representing a life-changing victory for the military veteran.

In 1988, the Army discharged our client “Under Other Than Honorable Conditions” because an Air Force investigation had revealed that she had engaged in a relationship with another woman, which was not permitted at the time.  Our client had also been sexually assaulted during her time in the Army and suffered mental health issues as a result.  A discharge “UOTHC” can affect eligibility for veteran benefits and employment prospects.  Just as important, and often more important, it leaves veterans feeling ashamed and stigmatized for their honorable service.

In November 2024, after Williams & Connolly helped her apply for a discharge upgrade, our client was successfully upgraded to a “General Under Honorable Conditions” discharge, and the Air Force changed the narrative that accompanies that discharge characterization so that future employers would not be prejudiced against our client by an unfavorable narrative.

Associate Daniel Boger led the matter and was assisted by Dan Shanahan throughout.
