Asylum Granted for W&C Client

January 2025

On January 29, 2025, Williams & Connolly obtained asylum for our client, the son of a man who assisted the U.S. government in Afghanistan and was assassinated by the Taliban in 2022.  A high schooler at the time, our client worked alongside his father who openly espoused the right of Afghan women to go to school and work outside the home, free speech, and the right of religious and ethnic minorities to practice freely and speak their mother tongues.  After the assassination, our client and the rest of his family went into hiding and began the long process of making their way to the United States.  As a way to obtain justice for his father, our client publicized the death of his father in the media, and the story was picked up and amplified by a major news outlet, making our client an even more vulnerable target to the Taliban.

Williams & Connolly took on the representation shortly after our client arrived in the United States.  During a hearing on January 29, 2025, following extensive briefing and argument, our client was granted asylum in the United States.

The Williams & Connolly team representing our client included associate Ari Goldfine, former associate Janae Stacier and former discovery attorney Alex Sun.
