Benchmark Litigation awarded Williams & Connolly its 2024 Impact Case Award for the victory secured in Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith. On May 18, 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Williams & Connolly client Lynn Goldsmith, holding in a 7-2 decision, following oral argument by Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation chair Lisa Blatt, that the Foundation’s use of a copyrighted photograph was not permitted under the fair use defense to copyright infringement.
Benchmark Litigation also named Lisa 2024 “Appellate Litigator of the Year.” Lisa serves as Chair of Williams & Connolly’s Supreme Court and Appellate Litigation practice and has argued 47 cases before the United States Supreme Court, prevailing in 41, an 89% win rate.* The National Law Journal has called her a "visionary" and one of "the 100 most influential lawyers in America." In 2021, The American Lawyer recognized her as the “Litigator of the Year."
The Williams & Connolly team representing Ms. Goldsmith included Lisa Blatt, Sarah Harris, Thomas Hentoff, Kimberly Broecker, Aaron Roper, Patrick Regan, and Rohit Asirvatham.
