Williams & Connolly has been named among Law360’s Life Sciences Practice Groups of the Year for 2021. The annual series recognizes “the law firms behind the litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry in the past year.” Led by co-chairs David I. Berl and Jessamyn S. Berniker, the Patent Litigation practice group has a long history of handling major intellectual property matters, particularly in patent litigation and related licensing disputes.
Announcing the award, Law360 highlighted the firm’s successful representation of Ionis Pharmaceuticals in an arbitration against its licensee Alnylam Pharmaceuticals that provided the company with a $41.2 million award. Additionally, the firm secured both a trial and appellate victory on behalf of Teva Pharmaceuticals International GmbH and Cephalon Inc. in a litigation battle with Apotex, Mylan and several other generic manufacturers over the company's cancer drug Bendeka, used to treat leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Teva’s and Cephalon’s win will preserve their exclusivity for sales of the drug – which has had more than $2 billion in cumulative sales – for over a decade.
